If you’ve recently been in a car accident in Alberta, you may need a Motor Vehicle Accident Massage! Motor vehicle accidents in Alberta totalled 100,231 in 2021, with traffic injuries increasing to 13,097. Moreover, Edmonton was listed on Allstate Canada’s ‘15 Cities Where Auto Collisions Happen Most’ list in 2019.
In a busy city like Edmonton, with Alberta's extreme weather conditions, car accidents are becoming increasingly frequent.
Hi! My name is Francesco, and I’m a Registered and Licensed Massage Therapist and Acupuncturist based in West Edmonton. I’ve been providing pain relief to massage patients for over a decade since I began my massage journey.
I’m here to provide information about the benefits of Motor Vehicle Accident Massage and some of the important insurance steps involved in car accident recovery.
What To Do After A Car Accident
Firstly, I recommend that all Albertan drivers read through the helpful information provided by the Albertan Government, under ‘Automobile Collisions and Insurance’. It has guidance on what to do at the scene of an accident, how to report a collision to your insurance company, and what you’re entitled to if injured.
If you have been injured in a car accident in Alberta, whether at fault or not, you are entitled to accident benefits coverage.
Secondly, I recommend booking a healthcare assessment as soon as possible.
Step 1: Book An Assessment With Your Primary Health Care Practitioner
A Primary Health Care Practitioner under the AB Diagnostic & Treatment Protocols is considered a chiropractor, medical doctor or physical therapist. They can complete an assessment of your injuries, and fill out the requested paperwork for your insurance company. (This AB-2 form can be downloaded from the Alberta Government website link above)
This appointment provides a formal record of your injuries for insurance and legal purposes and guides your recovery plan.
Step 2: Open Your Insurance Claim
Your next step is to complete the AB-1: Notice of Loss and Proof of Claim form and submit that to your insurance company. Depending on the diagnosis of your injuries, you could be entitled to accident injury benefits and treatment.
If your injuries fall under ‘sprain, strain, or whiplash associated disorder I or II’, you could be eligible for up to 14-21 treatments for up to 3 months from your accident date. These treatments can include physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture or massage treatments. Typically, your primary health care practitioner will recommend a main treatment of either physiotherapy or chiropractic, but you can request Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Massage treatments.
Step 3: Request Motor Vehicle Accident Massage
You can request a motor vehicle accident massage therapy referral during your initial assessment or at a follow-up appointment. Often, physicians aren’t aware of the therapeutic benefits that massage offers. It’s important to know your rights as a patient. This can also apply to acupuncture treatments if you would like to include acupuncture in your treatment plan.
Important: I recommend getting a referral form or prescription that specifies ‘MVA Massage from ____ (accident date)’ or ‘MVA Acupuncture from ____ (accident date)’. This ensures your insurance company accepts the current recommendation and knows it’s related to your car accident injuries.

Direct Billing
I can work with your insurance company for direct billing purposes. However, you need to discuss the number of available massage treatments with your insurance adjustor and primary healthcare practitioner. When you arrive for your first massage, please provide the claim number and adjuster contact information (name, address, email, fax) so I can directly bill your insurance company.
It’s your responsibility to keep track of your treatments to ensure you don’t exceed any limits, but I am happy to assist you in your recovery journey.
Personalized Treatments
I pride myself on creating a safe and relaxing environment for my clients and providing quality massage treatments tailored to your body. But don’t take my word for it.
Read some of the testimonials from my current patients.
“Francesco is an amazing massage therapist. He takes the time to listen to your needs and is attentive to your specific problem areas. He also offers suggestions for things you can do at home that will help with pain relief. He makes sure you are the one driving the session. I would recommend him to anyone!” - Brandy
“This was my first appointment with Francesco and I have to say that it felt as if I'd been getting a therapeutic massage with him for years. During my 90-minute session, Francesco balanced knowledge, technique and communication skills that are essential for effective and beneficial deep tissue massage. I appreciated Francesco's ability to "read" my body and actually work with me. I walked out of there feeling invigorated and, for lack of a better word, fixed. Looking forward to my next session with him!” - Yvon
